America's Test Kitchen, in their 2008 review of this roasting pan states that the pan has an encapsulated aluminum base. Since America's Test Kitchen is known for its diligence for researching and testing kitchen products, I was surprised to see that some of the reviews on Amazon.com stating the contrary.Thus, I went to the Cuisinart website, and the short product info list does not list this feature for the roasting pan (vs other pans in the Chef Classic Stainless Steel line). However, when I called Cuisinart product information line (1-800-726-0190), I was told that this particular roasting pan does have an encapsulated aluminum base.So bottom line, Amazon product information and America Test Kitchen (ATK) review is correct.For those that have smaller oven, check out Calphalon Contemporary Stainless Special-Value 16-Inch Roaster with Nonstick Roasting Rack, which is the top recommended choice from ATK. (This product was the #2 choice.)

First, to address the other reviews, yes the advertising copy for this item is incorrect. Evidently they have reused the text for the other items in this product line: "Cuisinart Chef's Classic Stainless Cookware." The problem is, those other items have aluminum encapsulated bottoms and stainless lids (they are stove top pans, not roasters.) This item has neither. I took one star off for that.As a roaster, however, and IF it will fit into your oven, it is a very handsome, sturdy piece of cookware. I have a vintage stove, from the days when ovens were built narrow and deep. It works great in my oven. My sister has a modern oven (wide and shallow.) It fits fine in her oven, but she has to put it in sideways.Don't buy it unless it will fit in your oven. Measure it: it needs 21" in the longest dimension.

I am very happy with this roasting pan. I agree with the other reviewers: it is on the larger side (with the handles it is more like 20 + inches long, not 16) but it fits in my oven just fine. I've found that it is sturdy and distributes heat evenly. And it's easy to clean, too. Definitely recommended.
